Executive Placement: Marian Banks-Nickleberry leads San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis

Marian Banks-Nickleberry has been named Executive Director of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis following a search by the Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership.

Marian comes to the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP) with more than 25 years’ experience both as a service provider (she is a LMSW) and in various management roles in governmental and nonprofit organizations that provide social and health services. In her previous role as the Executive Director of the Northeast Louisiana Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Marian worked closely with the board, staff, and external organizations to focus on the eradication of breast cancer. Before moving to Louisiana, she acquired a wealth of diverse experience in Detroit and Atlanta, in the fields of counseling, mental health, education, and housing and supportive services. Marian’s extensive management and executive experience includes significant organizational development and fund raising work. She has expertise identifying human service and mental health access challenges.

Marin said of her appointment to SFCP, “I am thrilled to be joining the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis-whose history of Psychoanalytic training programs play a vital role in the mental health field. I look forward to supporting the Board and Management Team to continue this long tradition of excellence.”

“I am pleased to have Marian as SFCP’s first Executive Director,” said Board Chair, Zach Cowan. “Marian’s combined background in the field of mental health and as a nonprofit management executive is perfect for SFCP. We are excited to welcome Marian to San Francisco and SFCP — we look forward to working with her.”

With a mission to advance the vitality and enduring value of psychoanalysis in Northern California, SFCP provides an extensive and in-depth training program in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. SFCP is a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association with many of its members involved in national and international leadership. The Center also sponsors a large, vibrant extension division which offers classes and seminars to mental health professionals, as well as to the general public. In addition, it maintains a low/moderate fee referral service for adults, children and adolescents as well as providing other programs for the general community.

Governed by a Board of Trustees in partnership with a psychoanalyst President elected by the membership, SFCP has a unique management structure that provides balance between volunteer leadership, member analysts and staff. The members of SFCP are comprised of many prominent psychiatrists, psychologists, professors, social workers and other licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals from the entire Bay Area.
