Marin Voice: As backbones of strong community, nonprofit leaders deserve recognition

Marin County is home to over 1,500 nonprofits, each working tirelessly to address critical needs in our community. From providing essential services for vulnerable populations to protecting our environment, they form the backbone of local support networks.

Behind every successful nonprofit are the individuals whose dedication makes it all possible.

For over three decades, the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership has been at the forefront of celebrating and empowering Marin nonprofits. What began in 1992 as a modest recognition of local heroes has evolved into the annual Heart of Marin event, a cornerstone of community engagement. It honors and uplifts the incredible nonprofits and volunteers that shape Marin, recognizing individuals and organizations at every stage of their service journey, from emerging leaders to seasoned visionaries whose work drives lasting change.

Volunteers contribute nearly 150 million hours annually in California alone, with an estimated economic value of over $5 billion. Local nonprofits rely on volunteers to sustain their services and reach more people. Recognizing their contributions not only celebrates their hard work but also inspires others. When we highlight their stories, we shine a light on the power of community engagement and the difference one person can make.

Yet, recognition goes beyond gratitude. It helps nonprofits attract more volunteers, raise vital funds and garner public awareness. By celebrating these achievements, we’re strengthening the entire ecosystem of service in Marin. The Heart of Marin awards brings attention to those who often work behind the scenes, providing them with the platform and acknowledgment they deserve.

As Marin continues to face challenges of economic inequality, housing shortages and environmental threats, nonprofits and volunteers are key players. The more we honor and support them, the greater our collective impact will be.

Let’s take the time to acknowledge the incredible contributions of Marin’s nonprofit leaders and volunteers. By recognizing their efforts, we’re not just celebrating individuals; we’re building a more resilient, compassionate community for everyone.

Maybe you know a middle or high school student who has taken bold steps to improve their school or community. Up to five youth volunteers will each receive a $1,000 award.

Is there a nonprofit that consistently provides exceptional service, delivering programs with excellence? Consider nominating them for the Achievement in Nonprofit Excellence Award, with a $5,000 award for the nonprofit.

Perhaps you’ve witnessed an executive director/CEO whose visionary leadership sparked lasting change in their organization and the wider community. The Excellence in Leadership Award could be the perfect recognition, with $5,000 awarded to the winning nonprofit.

There are also opportunities to celebrate board members who have made a measurable, positive impact through their service. Nominate them for the Excellence in Board Leadership Award. If selected, their nonprofit will receive $5,000.

We all know volunteers whose dedication and commitment have transformed their nonprofit’s ability to serve. These individuals can be nominated for Volunteer of the Year, and the volunteer’s nonprofit will receive $5,000.

Does someone come to mind who has introduced a creative and innovative solution to a critical community issue? Consider them for the Excellence in Innovation Award, which includes a $5,000 prize to further their work.

Or, you might know a business that has made volunteerism and philanthropy a core part of its culture. Recognize them with the Corporate Community Service Award and highlight their contribution to Marin.

Finally, if you know someone who has made a lifetime of notable contributions to a cause or issue, they deserve to be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, accompanied by a $5,000 gift to their chosen nonprofit.

Your nominations can help illuminate the stories of those working passionately to improve Marin. All nominees and recipients will be honored at the 32nd annual awards luncheon Jan. 9 at the Marin Center Exhibit Hall in San Rafael.
