Board Governance Boot Camp: Register here for all 4 sessions

This series is ideal for nonprofit Executive Directors/CEOs and nonprofit board members. Board chairs and those serving in an officer position, or are thinking of doing so, will find the sessions particularly useful.

Strong, smart boards are critical to the health of your nonprofit organization. Despite their passion, nonprofit board members don’t always come to the job with experience in things like nonprofit fundraising or governance. Our four-part series on board governance, led by CVNL leaders Linda Jacobs, CEO, and Patricia Murillo, Chief Program Officer, helps organizations diagnose their boards’ needs and equip their board members with the right training and resources to take their leadership to the next level. From building a board to performance metrics, these sessions aim to maximize the engagement of your nonprofit’s biggest advocates and allies.

Board governance practices are divided into the following 4 sessions: Fundamentals, Structure, Development, and Fundraising. Join us for all four, or register for individual sessions at the following links: Session 1 - Fundamentals of Effective Governance; Session 2 - Structure, Committees, and Assessment; Session 3 - Strategic Board Development; Session 4 - Boards and Fundraising.

Session 1 — Fundamentals of Effective Governance (led by Linda Jacobs)
Thursday, October 28, 2021, 9:00-11:00am ($175 for CVNL members, $275 for non-members)

Part one of a four-part series, this course provides a solid foundation to deepen your understanding of nonprofit governance and how to better align the work of the board to heighten engagement and maximize impact. The focus of this course is on the roles and responsibilities of individual board members and the collective board.

Session will cover:
  • Better define the roles and responsibilities of board members
  • Differentiate between operational and governance decisions
  • Apply best practices that build effective boards in the areas of structure, role clarity, team dynamics, and board continuity

Session 2 — Structure, Committees, and Assessment (led by Linda Jacobs)
Thursday, November 18, 2021, 9:00-11:00am ($175 for CVNL members, $275 for non-members)

Without a strong structure, boards can fall prey to a whole host of dysfunctions, not the least of which is wasted time, boring, or unfocused meetings, and lack of strategic engagement from the board. Part two of a four-part series, this course will dive deeper into specific structures and assessment practices that strengthen nonprofit boards.

Session will cover:
  • Committees, task teams, and advisory council structures and functions
  • Running productive board meetings
  • Board and Chief Executive Assessments

Session 3 — Strategic Board Development  (led by Linda Jacobs)
Tuesday, December 14, 2021, 9:00-10:30am ($175 for CVNL members, $275 for non-members)

Given the tremendous responsibility and decision-making power of boards, and the length of most board members’ tenures, making sure you have the right composition of leaders on your board is essential. In this third course of our four-part series, we will look at ways nonprofits can “get the right people around the table” and keep them engaged through ongoing development and evaluation.

Session will cover:

  • The Board building cycle
    • Identify needs
    • Cultivate leaders
    • Recruitment
  • Board member orientation
  • Training and development
  • Evaluating board performance – key metrics and dashboards

Session 4 — Boards and Fundraising (led by Patricia Murillo)NEW!
Thursday, January 13, 2021, 9:00-10:30am ($175 for CVNL members, $275 for non-members)

Learn about the role of board members in creating sustainable funding for the nonprofits they serve. This will include strategies to enhance your board engagement in fundraising, and how to provide guidance and support. Join us for this NEW session, presented by CVNL's Chief Program Officer Patricia Murillo.
