Celebrate the power of families who work together to support
their neighborhoods and communities

SAN RAFAEL, CA — Throughout the year, Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) joins fellow HandsOn Action Centers across the country to celebrate national and local days of service. A Day of Service (DOS) is a set time when volunteers are encouraged to participate with nonprofit organizations, service opportunities, event or activities. DOS help to raise awareness, mobilize volunteers, and provide individuals with an opportunity to build new and engage connections & find support for programs.

Family Volunteer Day is a Day of Service that celebrates the power of families who work together to support their neighborhoods and communities. Each year, thousands of families use the day to teach children valuable, real-life lessons about compassion and caring. Volunteering also can be a great way for kids and adults to develop skills, learn more about their community and make friends.

To celebrate this day, CVNL is partnering with nonprofits in Marin to offer five family-friendly volunteer projects. From habitat restoration or gardening, to Thanksgiving decorating or blanket making, there is a project for everyone’s interest. The first 20 youth that register for Family Volunteer Day opportunities will also receive a free t-shirt. All youth volunteers under aged 16 are required to bring a signed Youth Waiver (found on the Volunteer Portal).

FIVE FAMILY VOLUNTEER DAY OF SERVICE PROJECTS

Pumpkin Pie Baking Party at The Cedars of Marin
Saturday, November 21, 2015, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Families will come together to bake pumpkin pies at The Cedars of Marin main campus in the John Peterson Hall Kitchen. The pies will also be distributed to other Cedars of Marin campuses for special Thanksgiving meals. This project is FULL/NOT AVAILABLE

One Tam Day of Thanks
Saturday, November 21, 2015, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Volunteers are invited to join One Tam to help maintain the long-term health and preservation of Mount Tamalpais (Mt. Tam) and beautify the area for families, commuters and wildlife. Activities for volunteers include marsh beautification and invasive species removal spread out over a large area of multi-use path and Bothin Marsh Preserve. There will be opportunities to learn about wildlife on Mt. Tam and the ecology of tidal marshes, and time to enjoy prime bird watching.

Make Lap Blankets for Kindred at Home Hospice Patients
Saturday, November 21, 2015, 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Volunteers will make fleece-tied blankets to give to Kindred at Home Hospice Patients. The blanket making activities will be held at the CVNL office in San Rafael and blankets will be delivered to hospice patients in their homes.

Bring Thanksgiving Spirit to the Free Dining Room at St. Vincent de Paul
Saturday, November 21, 2015, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Volunteers are invited to come and share their artistic talents by creating Thanksgiving decorations for the Free Dining Room at St. Vincent de Paul Society for our poor and homeless neighbors who spend their Thanksgiving holiday there to enjoy a hot meal.

Beautify the Marin City Garden & Orchard
Saturday, November 21, 2015, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Volunteers are invited to help build community and promote healthy, sustainable living alongside Marin City residents at the community garden and orchard. Volunteers will prepare garden plots for community members to claim or tend plots on behalf of seniors and other residents in need of assistance. They will also complete general upkeep and beautification projects for the space as a whole.
