Event on 11/10 Will Tackle the “Overhead Myth”

Leadership training challenges nonprofits and funders to think differently about nonprofit overhead

SAN RAFAEL, CA — Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) will be hosting a workshop on November 10, 2015, which will focus on the changing conversation around nonprofit overhead and indirect costs. Jan Masaoka, CEO at California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits) will lead the discussion. “Everybody’s talking about nonprofit overhead. CalNonprofits is doing something about it with the launch of a multicomponent initiative… the Nonprofit Overhead Project will leverage millions of flexible dollars for nonprofits in California and elsewhere by changing government reimbursement rates, foundation grants and donor analyses,” said Masaoka.

“The percent of charity expenses that go to administrative and fundraising costs, commonly referred to as ‘overhead,’ is a poor measure of a charity’s performance,” said Linda Davis, CEO at CVNL. “Funders should pay more attention to other factors of nonprofit performance: transparency, governance, leadership, and results.” Overhead costs include important investments charities make to improve their work: investments in training, planing, evaluation, and internal systems, as well as their efforts to raise money so they can operate their programs. These expenses allow a charity to sustain itself.”
